- Avery County Info (BlueRidgeHighlander.net) - ‘Linville Gorge and Falls, Linville Caverns, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, Pisgah National Forest, the Elk and Watauga Rivers along with numerous other waterways throughout the county set the pace and draw the visitors to this “High Country” region.’
- Pisgah National Forest - ‘The Grandfather Ranger District receives its' name from Grandfather Mountain, one of the dominant peaks of the area. Ironically, most of Grandfather Mountain is not in the Grandfather Ranger District. The district lies southeast of the Blue Ridge Parkway, between Asheville and Blowing Rock.’

- Grandfather Mountain - (8 miles) - Towering 5,946 feet above northwest North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain is operated as a scenic travel attraction and includes the Mile High Swinging Bridge, Wildlife Habitats, Nature Walks and Hiking Trails.
- Grandfather Mountain Highland Games - ‘MISSION: To carry on and promote the annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans, to foster and restore interest in traditional dancing, piping, drumming, athletic achievement, music and Gaelic culture.’
- Linville Caverns - (8 miles) - Deep inside of the Humpback Mountain lie the Linville Caverns, the only limestone caverns open to the public in North Carolina. More here...
- Linville Falls - (5 miles) - ‘Linville Falls is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Trails lead to views of both the upper and lower falls. Forests offer virgin hemlock mixed with other familiar trees such as white pine, oaks, hickory, and birch. A colorful and varied display of wildflowers decorates the trails in the spring. Red and golden leaves in fall beautifully contrast with the soothing green of hemlocks.’
- Linville Gorge - “The Grand Canyon of North Carolina” - ‘The wilderness of the Linville Gorge is rich in both plant and animal life. There are five species of rare plants, several varieties of rhododendron, and virgin forests in the deep coves... Sand mrtyle, red chokeberry, azalea, turkey beard, bristly locust, yellow root, silverbell, orchids, ninebark, and wild indigo are among the many plant species. Animal species include deer, bear, squirrel, raccoon, grouse, turkey, vultures, owls, hawks, as well as brown and rainbow trout.’
